About 200 soccer fans, many of them English, clashed with police in the Portuguese resort town of Albufeira late last night.
Officers from a paramilitary force, some on horseback, intervened after fighting broke out in an area of bars and clubs frequented by British holidaymakers.
Fans pelted police with bottles, chairs and glasses, the running battles lasting up to two hours. The violence follows England's last-minute loss to France at the European championships on Monday.
