Silver Ferns captain Anna Rowberry last night won Auckland's Sporting Excellence award at the annual dinner to recognise the city's top sports achievers.
Rowberry led New Zealand to the world championship title in Jamaica. She pipped Black Sticks hockey goalkeeper Helen Clark and soccer international Maia Jackman for the sportswomen's award.
All Black Carlos Spencer won the Sportsman of the Year, ahead of his fellow Auckland and All Black team-mates Doug Howlett and Joe Rokocoko, and rower Mahe Drysdale. Spencer also won the Maori Achievement award.
The Auckland NPC team picked up Team of the Year, ahead of the provincial women's cricket and rugby sides, and to cap off a good night for rugby, Peter Sloane won Coach of the Year for his success with the Blues, ahead of Auckland NPC coach Wayne Pivac and rollersports coach Bill Begg.
The two junior award winners were tennis player G D Jones and hockey player Frances Kreft.
