All efforts will be made to ensure the safety of New Zealand referee Paddy O'Brien when he controls the Springboks-Wallabies Tri-Nations rugby test at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, on Sunday (NZ time), the South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu) said today.
Sarfu spokesman Anthony Mackaiser said Ellis Park had the best security of any South African rugby field but yesterday's attack on Irish referee Dave McHugh in Durban raised the issue of both referee and player safety.
He said Sarfu would meet the Ellis Park management this week to ensure security guards would be placed around the playing field on Sunday.
