Football's January transfer window came to an end yesterday in which a record £419.5m (NZ$809.4m) was spent by English Premier League clubs.
Time will tell whether clubs spent wisely or wasted millions on a dud, but deadline day can also prove to be a costly day for fans.
Fans often prove their dedication to their much-loved club by getting a tattoo of the team logo, or going as far as a player's name. But the lesson as learned by a Manchester City fan in 2009 is to wait until the player is officially signed with your club.
It's a cautionary tale that hopefully hasn't been repeated since.
Eight years ago City were on the verge of signing Brazilian superstar Kaka from AC Milan. The English side put in a bid of more than 100m pounds and one fan was so certain that the deal would be signed that he got Kaka inked on his chest, under the name Robinho, who signed with the club a few months earlier, the BBC reports.
Of course he was left red-faced when the deal fell through just before the transfer deadline. Meanwhile Robinho didn't exactly turn out to be a club legend, scoring 14 goals in 41 games before leaving in the two year of a four-year deal.
And if a transfer does successfully go through, at least learn to spell the new player's name correctly. An Everton fan seemed to be so delighted with the signing of Turkish star Cenk Tosun last month that he got his name printed, or should that be a name printed, on a team shirt.
It wasn't until the fan was being interviewed on a Turkish TV show that it was pointed out that he had misspelled the forward's name.
