One of the great sporting curses remains in place after Gaelic football team County Mayo lost their ninth final overnight.
Mayo looked set to finally claim their first title since 1951 before two-time defending champions Dublin scored a last minute free kick to win 1-17 to 1-16 in the All-Ireland Football Championship at Croke Park.
The defeat extends a famous curse put on the Mayo side by a priest following their club's last title 66 years ago.
According to reports, back in 1951 the Mayo side were celebrating winning back-to-back titles on the 233km bus ride back to Castlebar.
The team bus passed through the village of Foxford while a funeral was taking place.
After the bus failed to slow down and the players continued to celebrate their title, a local priest apparently put a curse on the side saying they were never will another All-Ireland final while those players lived.
Since then Mayo have lost nine finals appearances.
The Irish Mirror reports that two members of the 1951 squad are still alive - Padraig Carney and Paddy Prendergast.
Carney however disputes the curse and the story all together.
"On the way home we all went our different ways. Some of us went by train and some went by car but there was no talk of a curse at the time. I don't know how it got started," he told the Irish Mirror.
Still, never let the truth get in the way of a good curse story.
