The Kiwis are without spinner Daniel Vettori, who was hoping to make his comeback after a long-term Achilles injury, while England is without pace bowlers Stuart Broad and Steven Finn.
Broad was ruled out by a bruised right knee he sustained in the final test at Headingley, while Finn has a shore shin.
Off-spinner Nathan McCullum was called up for New Zealand to replace Vettori.
