Former Otago cricket coach Mike Hesson is expected to be named as John Wright's successor as Black Caps coach this afternoon.
Radio Sport cricket commentator Bryan Waddle says with director of cricket John Buchanan already saying he wanted a New Zealander in charge, there is no other option.
It is believed Hesson, Matthew Mott and Trent Woodhill are the remaining candidates to replace John Wright after South African Paddy Upton withdrew from contention last week.
Waddle says the hiring of Hesson would be a good result for New Zealand's point of view.
Despite not having a great international track record, he's been successful and professional in everything he's done with Otago Cricket.
New Zealand Cricket will make the announcement at a press conference at 2pm.
The candidates have already been interviewed twice by a panel consisting of NZC chief executive David White, director of cricket John Buchanan, board member Rob Hart, New Zealand Cricket Players Association representative Stephen Fleming and High Performance Sport New Zealand chief executive Alex Baumann.
Wright's 18-month tenure with the Black Caps finishes at the end of their current tour of the West Indies.
