Springbank Sam has the $85,000 Yearling Sales Trot for 2-year-olds in his sights at Ashburton next Tuesday after a first-up win at Addington yesterday.
Springbank Sam is trained by Phil Williamson, who won the Yearling Sales Trot for 2-year-olds at Addington last May with Diedre's Flash.
Springbank Sam is raced by Alistair and Denise Smith, of Wendon, who have won 17 races, including the 2009 Dominion Handicap and Harness Jewels races at Ashburton and Cambridge at three and four with Springbank Richard from the North Otago stable of Williamson.
Springbank Sam was a $26,000 purchase at the 2009 premier yearling sale when offered by Gary Allen, of Wellington.
Springbank Sam is by Sundon, the sire of Springbank Richard, from Niamey and thus a brother to Mark Purdon and Greg Payne's good trotter Pocaro (10 wins).
He was freshened after an unplaced run at Addington on February 2 and will resume in the NZ Trotting Championship at Addington on April 3. He ran fourth in the race won by One Over Kenny last year.

Charge Forward, winner of the Sires' Stakes for 2-year-olds in track record time at Forbury Park last Thursday, will continue his southern campaign in the $40,000 Southern Sales Graduate at Addington on Friday night.
Charge Forward was a $30,000 buy at the 2008 Australasian Classic yearling sale at Karaka by Pukekohe trainer Steven Reid on behalf of the Auckland Trotting Club 2019 syndicate.
The colt is by Grinfromeartoear and the first foal of Pure Envy, an unraced mare by Jenna's Beach Boy.
He was bred by Highfields Bloodstock, Albany, operated by Chris and Tina Barlow, who sold the top-priced lot at the Australasian sale last month - a colt by Art Major from Sabelle for $180,000.
Chris, a long-haul airline pilot and Tina, daughter of Helensville horseman Tony Milina have been breeding horses, standardbred and thoroughbred for about 10 years.
They bought LC Tricky, the grand-dam of Charge Forward, in the United States and returned her to New Zealand in foal to Jenna's Beach Boy.
LC Tricky (Albatross - Pretty Tricky) was a minor winner and a sister to Turn The Tide, winner of 23 races, including the Jugette and Tarport Hap Stakes. Pretty Tricky left 13 winners from 14 foals to race.
Pure Envy qualified but she did not race because of a knee problem. She is also the dam of a yearling filly by Real Desire and foaled a filly to Mach Three this season. She has been served by Grinfromeartoear.
