Motorsport: Huge task to cater for the thousands

Dean Calvert, general manager of promoters IMG, said the 170,000 people expected to attend the event would be well catered for at key points on the circuit.

Stands would be erected on Victoria Park and discussions were being held with developers on the outside of that area. Three city car parks around the track would provide viewing areas and there would be grandstands at the sharp corner into Hobson St, outside TVNZ and by Victoria Park Market.

To assist foot traffic flow there are plans for five pedestrian bridges across the track and for mobile grandstands to be trucked in on semi-trailers.

The track will be enclosed on both sides with inter-locked one-metre-high concrete barriers with a 1.7m fence on top.

Manhole covers on the track will need to be secured by bolts because they can be dislodged by the downforce from the cars.
