Vaughan Coveny scored twice, making him New Zealand's leading international goal scorer with 30, passing the record of the late Jock Newell.
Fellow striker Chris Killen scored the other goal.
Coach Ricki Herbert is delighted with the result, saying it is a special occasion for so many in the New Zealand footballing ranks.
New Zealand's next match is against Estonia on Thursday morning before they take on Brazil.
