A second man has died on Rotorua roads in the space of a week - this time a 66-year-old man near Golden Springs.
The man, from the South Island, was killed when the car he was driving collided with a station wagon on State Highway 5 about 300m north ofTutukau Rd yesterday morning.
The 36-year-old man driving the other car, believed to be from Tauranga, was in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital.
Road policing manager Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said it was the second death on roads in the past seven days.
Last Monday Allen Anderson, 63, died instantly in a crash involving his van and a logging truck on State Highway 30 near Horohoro.
"I encourage all drivers not to be complacent and be prepared for the unexpected when travelling," Mr Troy said. He said the crash happened on a straight piece of road and speed wasn't believed to be a factor.
The cause of the crash was under investigation and police would be looking at the environment, vehicles and drivers to see what factors, if any, contributed to the crash, he said.
Mr Troy said those travelling long distances should plan their journeys and take breaks every two hours.
The Rotorua Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
Road and weather conditions at the time were fine. The speed limit in the area is 100km/h. Police will release the man's name once family has been informed.
