A couple's special milestone was celebrated at Bupa Redwood Retirement Village.

Laurie and Christine Slade celebrated 60 years of marriage this week.

The couple moved into Bupa Redwood Retirement Village in March 2014, and are about to make a change, with Laurie moving into the village's care home. The best thing is it's right next door, so not far for Christine to travel at all.

"I'm very glad I don't have to drive to see Laurie as he's now right next door. It's great to have him still near me," Christine says.

They were married three days after Laurie graduated as a doctor from the University of Edinburgh in 1960.

He was a GP in Scotland for many years, and in 1971 they decided to move to New Zealand. Laurie continued as a GP in Lower Hutt.

Christine was a speech therapist.

They moved to Rotorua after Laurie's retirement as a doctor to help their children with the after-school care of the grandchildren.

They have two sons, a daughter and 10 grandchildren.

According to Christine, "humour and no blame" is the secret to a happy marriage.
