This morning Chris Jones will cycle out of Rotorua on what will be the final legs of a more than 1200km trek in support of a cause close to home.
He's raising money for prostate cancer with a journey from Christchurch to Hampton Downs.
While his journey ends in Hampton Downs on October 7, he'll cycle for a further four hours around the track as part of Pedal4Prostate, an endurance race in support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The Christchurch man, who is the vice-president of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, has survived prostate cancer himself and stopped in Rotorua as part of the journey.
"Rotorua wasn't originally on the course but one feature of the ride is I dedicate each day to a chap who is no longer with us because of prostate cancer.
"I experienced prostate cancer and I'm able to get out on my bike and ride whereas the chaps I'm remembered every single day can't."
Jones was 51 when diagnosed. He had no symptoms and it was unexpected. However he found out early and was treated successfully.
Jones started his ride on September 23 and rolled into Rotorua yesterday to stay overnight.
He dedicated the day to Rotorua man Phil Hunt, who lost his battle with prostate cancer last year.
From now, Jones will ride to Cambridge, then to Ohaupo and then to Hampton Downs. He's asking people to sponsor him per kilometre.
