Every lunchtime and morning tea, students at Mamaku School can be spotted making signs, coasters, candle holders and more for the school's annual gala.
Principal Gary Veysi said the gala, which is on Thursday, will be just like an old country school gala and all the pupils are chipping in.
"It's all the hands-on learning," Veysi said.
"It's showing the kids an understanding they need to be involved. And it is for them at the end of the day," he said.
All the money raised through the gala will be used to help fix the school pool and put a kitchen in the school hall.
The pool is about 60 years old and leaking, Veysi said.
Leah van den Eng and Reece Osborne plan to run a Nerf gun stall at the gala where people try to hit targets.
Leah said she was looking forward to getting people involved and giving the activity a go.
Reece said he looked forward to the gala year-round.
Veysi said former students at the school usually came back to help out with the gala too.
"It's neat for that community feel," he said.
"There are so many activities and events ... there's something for everybody."
One pair of pupils have been making coasters from old wood pallets and candle holders from tree branches which Veysi said also taught them how to reuse materials.
The gala takes place on March 22, from 5pm at the school at 54 Tarena St. It will feature a white elephant sale, food, games and activities, and more.
