Nominations open next week for a Whakatane District Council by-election for the Galatea-Waiohau Subdivision of the Murupara Community Board.
Following the resignation of Patrick McCarthy, an extraordinary vacancy has arisen and a by-election is now being held to fill the vacancy, the council said in a statement.
Nomination papers will be available from Wednesday from:
1. Administration Offices, Whakatane District Council, Civic Centre, Commerce St, Whakatane;
2. Murupara Service Centre & Library, Civic Square, Pine Drive, Murupara;
3. www.whakatane.govt.nz or 0800 922 822.
To be eligible to stand for election, a candidate must be enrolled as a Parliamentary elector and a New Zealand citizen.
If more than one nomination is received by the close of nominations at noon on May 24 a postal ballot will be held for the electors of the Galatea-Waiohau Subdivision of the Murupara Community Board. The by-election will then conclude at noon, July 20.
The preliminary electoral roll will be available for public inspection between Wednesday and May 24 at the above locations.
The Galatea-Waiohau Subdivision incorporates all of the Waiohau and Galatea areas including the Murupara rural areas of Golf Rd and Main Rd to the entrance of Te Urewera.
