Model aircraft will take to the skies near Lake Tarawera on Sunday in a show of speed and acrobatics entertaining young and old.
The Rotorua Model Aircraft Club is hosting an airshow displaying vintage planes, gliders, warbirds, helicopters and drones.
The big star would be the miniature jet engine, said organiser David Thornley.
"It has a 1m wing span and flies using exactly the same principles as a jet. It's fast and loud and does acrobatics, flying almost out of sight, then comes whistling back. It's incredible to watch."
Most of the models have been assembled by the owners with some taking only a few hours to construct, while others have been built entirely from scratch and can take hundreds of hours.
Creating the planes is one thing. The next skill you need to master is using the radio controls to keep the craft up and flying in the right direction.
Mr Thornley said most young people caught on quickly, but older people found it harder to learn.
But it's a skill older people found helpful, because it enhanced the brain's neuroplasticity, and kept the brain active, he said.
If you are interested in taking up a new hobby, this show is the perfect opportunity to find out more.
"The club has had a few retirees join. They are enjoying it and finding it's good for their brain. All you need is a working brain and fingers that work."
Trainer radio control models will be available at the airshow for people to try on the day, and club members will also be available for inquiries and advice.
A barbecue and refreshments will be available. Bring sunglasses and sun hat. No dogs. Site is 1km before the Buried Village.
