A man has been airlifted to hospital after a hunting mishap in the Tongariro National Park.
Emergency services - including a rescue helicopter - rushed to the area after being alerted to the shooting about 1.30pm.
A police spokesperson said it appeared the hunter had accidentally shot himself in the leg.
A St John spokesperson said an ambulance, a National Park first response group unit, and the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter from Taupo were dispatched to the scene.
The hunter was aged in his mid-20s and has been flown to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries.
The man was in an isolated area of the Tongariro Forest Park in the vicinity of Kapoors Rd, Inspector Ross Grantham said.
