A 43-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman charged with assault in relation to the death of a Taupo toddler have appeared in court.
The pair faced one count of assault on a child.
The charge relates to an incident on Monday when 3-year-old Moko Sayviah Rangitoheriri was admitted to Taupo Hospital with critical injuries.
He died before he was able to be transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital. At Rotorua District Court yesterday Judge Maree MacKenzie made an order for interim name suppression for the two defendants and the reasons given for the suppression.
The publication of the summary of facts has also been suppressed.
Judge MacKenzie said while it was clear the case had high, significant public interest, the reasons given by lawyers Scott Mills and Harry Edward for name suppression justified the order.
The pair were remanded in custody until their next appearance on September 10 at Taupo District Court.
