A family have escaped a fire in their Glenholme home tonight.
The Rotorua Fire Brigade was called to the fire on Phillip St about 9.15pm, where smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the brick unit. Two engines attended.
The homeowner told the Rotorua Daily Post he and his young daughter had been in bed and his wife was in the shower.
He said his wife came out of the shower to find the lights off and she could smell smoke.
His wife woke them and then called 111, and they went outside, he said.
A neighbour said a passerby also banged on the door to wake the occupants up.
Rotorua fire brigade station officer Tony Kelly said his crew put the fire out pretty quickly.
He said the fire was contained mainly in a back room and into the roof of the house.
There was some damage, he said.
"There is a bit [of damage] in there mainly to that back room and into the ceiling."
Fire safety investigators were on their way to the scene to look into the cause of the fire, he said.
He said it was good the house had working smoke alarms, which had gone off.
The homeowner said he suspected the fire had been caused by an issue with the wiring, however Mr Kelly said it was too early to comment on the possible cause.
