Afternoon traffic was brought to a standstill today after an empty logging truck collided with a car on the outskirts of Whakatane.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection of SH30 and Mill Rd and around 3pm.
The logging truck was just off the highway with it's trailer askew while a blue station wagon with frontal damage and deployed airbags sat in the middle of the road.
The truck driver was talking to police while the driver of the car was taken to Whakatane Hospital by St John Ambulance.
Traffic leaving Whakatane was backed up to the Landing Rd bridge while people travelling toward the town were directed along Mill Rd and through the Bunnings Warehouse carpark.
A number of people had stopped to assist before police took control of the scene. Road crews were required to mop up fluids that had leaked from the vehicles.
