Rotorua District Council has been granted $32,000 from the Ministry for Youth Development's Youth Development Partnership Fund.
The council is among 30 councils, including Whakatane District Council and Kawerau District Council, to receive funding towards their youth-led and designed projects for 2015.
This includes youth ambassador leadership training, Rotorua Youth Voice Consultation, and five youth-led community events.
Rotorua district councillor Tania Tapsell said youth would decide what events the money would be spent on.
"As this project is being led by the young people themselves, it is up to them to decide what events will be best to engage a variety of local youth. This project empowers youth to use their own ideas and decide how the project will be carried out. The Rotorua District Council and partners of the Rotorua Youth Voice project are available to provide support," she said.
There would be many opportunities for youth, she said.
"Youth will be influencing, shaping, designing, and contributing to the creation of a youth strategy for the Rotorua District Council. Therefore a diverse range of opportunities will arise for youth. Firstly there will be 30 young people driving the project who will experience opportunities such as training and gaining new skills and experience, with event management and project planning. There will also be opportunities for other youth to attend events, and provide their feedback into the Rotorua Youth Voice," she said.
Youth would develop leadership, teamwork, communication, event management, project planning, time management, networking, decision-making and interpersonal skills, she said.
The Youth Development Partnership Fund was launched in 2010.
