There is something about capturing a moment - in a photo - that can get to someone's soul, amateur photographer Bradie Paul says.
The 48-year-old is Opotiki's very own photographer; dedicating most of her days to going around the town to capture various moments at community events and family gatherings.
Ms Paul has been nominated in the Community Spirit category of the Pride of New Zealand Awards.
All the photos she takes are posted on a Facebook page she started to give locals who now live overseas a chance to see what's happening in their town. She also gifts her photos to people who request specific pictures of loved ones, particularly those who have passed on.
Ms Paul, a diabetic, suffered an accident about 10 years ago which left part of her brain damaged. As a result, she has short-term memory loss - meaning much of what she has to get done throughout the day must be written down or captured on her camera.
"I worked my whole life and when this happened, I got put on an invalid's benefit. But I can't sit at home.
"I've always loved film photography, so I thought I'd continue to do it - this time, not just for me, but for other people."
Ms Paul attends all community events including festivals, market days and, recently, the opening of a local supermarket. She also attends events at the local marae such as 21st birthday celebrations, weddings and funerals.
Being able to take and then share photos with others was something she loved.
"There's a need to capture moments, even landscapes. For children, they can look back and see what this place used to look like."
