A 25-year-old woman has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a man was stabbed in Whakatane on Tuesday night.
Awhina Patuwai appeared in the Whakatane District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody overnight while police continue their investigations.
She also faces charges of shoplifting $473.13 worth of cosmetics and clothing from Farmers on November 13, shoplifting $156 worth of alcohol from Liquorland on November 26, and two breaches of bail.
Patuwai appeared in the dock wearing a white boiler suit. She wiped tears from her face as a discussion went on between Judge Louis Bidois and lawyer Gene Tomlinson.
Mr Tomlinson said Patuwai had consented to the overnight remand in custody and a bail application would be made today.
As Patuwai left the dock, people in the gallery called "love you sis".
Police had said the man who was stabbed suffered serious injuries to his chest and was flown to Waikato Hospital for emergency surgery. He was yesterday in the Intensive Care Unit in a critical but stable condition.
Detective Greg Standen said police carried out a forensic examination yesterday and were not looking for anyone else connected to the stabbing at this stage. The Hotene St house was secured with police tape while the forensic team carried out its testing.
