Windsurfing is an all action water sport which has captured the imagination of people around the world.
A group of Rotorua enthusiasts want to spread the message to as many young people as they can at an introductory open day at the Rotorua Yacht Club tomorrow afternoon.
A similar open day last year attracted around 20 beginners aged from 12 to 17.
A number of them are still involved in the sport 12 months on and competed in a North Island championship regatta last weekend at Rotorua.
Open day co-ordinator Ian Wallbridge said the sport does not require a costly outlay to get started.
As well, Lake Rotorua is an ideal training ground for beginner windsurfers, he said.
"It's fast, simple, and cheap and it's adrenalin-boosting and it's family friendly," he said.
"When you fall off you don't break any bones."
Dr Wallbridge said Lake Rotorua was also safe, shallow and sheltered near the yacht club.
"If you fall off you just walk back to safety with ease and alacrity, put the board on your roof rack and try again another day."
There will be sufficient sailboards available tomorrow for anyone who wants to have an introductory coaching lesson, he said.
Rotorua had a small and helpful windsurfing community which was always eager to promote the sport, he said.
"Young people have the chance to enjoy being on the water at one of our best lakes, instead of being on a computer on Saturday afternoon."
