An 18-year-old man who ran naked down a street - stealing trackpants off a washing line as he went - has been given six months' home detention.
Solomon Raki was sentenced in the Rotorua District Court on Thursday to six months' home detention after previously pleading guilty to burglary, wilful damage, disorderly behaviour and two charges of theft.
Judge James Weir described some of Raki's offending as "really bizarre".
According to the police summary of facts, Raki, who was drunk, smashed a window at Whakatane High School with his fist at about 9am on July 28.
He then had an altercation with his girlfriend and took off all his clothes except his socks. He ran naked along Goulstone Rd and through several properties, startling residents. While running, he stole a pair of $60 tracksuit pants off a resident's washing line. Police later found him wearing the pants.
He told police he did it as he was angry with his girlfriend.
Around 3am that morning Raki had burgled a Valley Rd home, taking two laptops and a Samsung Galaxy cellphone.
He also stole $600 worth of tools from a vehicle on a Douglas St property. Most of the stolen items were later recovered by police.
Raki told police he stole the property to pay off fines.
Raki's lawyer, Wiremu Te Are, said his client had recently "exploded" onto the Whakatane community and was "offending all over the place".
"If there's a man that needs intervention, this is the person here."
Mr Te Are said Raki was articulate and intelligent but could not read or write therefore had trouble applying for employment.
He said Raki now realised he could go to jail and hopefully that would be a "kick in the pants".
The judge acknowledged Raki had been on a 24 hour curfew in Rotorua for almost a month, with no breaches, and had the support of his family.
Judge Weir ordered Raki also pay $109.15 reparation for the broken window.
