Biking is a family activity for the Martin family and yesterday, 4-year-old Lauryn managed a 4km bike ride with the help of her big brother Riley.
Lauryn and her brother took part in yesterday's G.J. Gardner Homes Bike Mania at Puarenga Park and completed the 4km Mass ive Mania Course, which was a scenic ride around the sulphur flats.
It was the second time the pair had taken part in the event but this year was the first time for Lauryn without her mum, Mel Martin. Last year Lauryn sat in a child's seat on her mum's bike.
Mrs Martin, who gave Lauryn a little help along the way, said it was her big brother who took over this year. She said they both enjoyed their day out on their bikes, especially getting their medals.
"She did it with her big brother,'' Mrs Martin said.
"She [Lauryn] loved it.
"He [Riley] enjoyed it, he just pretty much just looked after her.''
Mrs Martin said her family enjoyed biking and got out together as a family in the Redwoods as much as they could.
She said Bike Mania was a fun event for the children to take part in and with the weather and other activities available, it was a good day out.
"We basically try and do all the biking events in Rotorua for kids.''
"It's a good day out.''
The Martin children were among hundreds who entered one of the three courses offered at Bike Mania, which also saw Olympic cycling medallists Sarah Walker (BMX) and Sam Bewley (team pursuit) taking part.
The event is run with The Daily Post support and funds raised go towards Literacy in Homes.
Organiser and The Daily Post promotions co-ordinator Kathy Emery said about 350 children had registered for the event.
She had been given a lot of feedback from parents who said they enjoyed themselves.
"It was a great day, it's always a neat family day and the kids love it.''
There were three tracks for the participants, including one for those without any experience, while another saw the more experienced riders take on the Redwoods. Major Mania was a 2km course, Massive Mania 4km and Mammoth Mania was 10km long. There was also a giant bouncy castle for the kids to enjoy, as well lots of food stalls.
