Koutu residents are being encouraged to have their say about ways to keep the community safe.
Rotorua identity Kingi Biddle said a community meeting had been organised after a man ended up in a serious condition in hospital as a result of what was thought to be a gang fight.
The incident happened in Koutu on September 30.
Detective Sergeant Garry Hawkins, of the Rotorua police, said the fight involved a large number of people and weapons.
When police arrived, a 34-year-old was found lying unconscious in a driveway. Mr Hawkins said he appeared to have been hit by a car.
Mr Biddle said the incident had sparked some concern among Koutu residents.
"A few of us got together to talk about it and we decided the best thing would be to have a bit of a community meeting."
He said Koutu was more than just a suburb to many residents.
"It is more than just our home," he said. "It is a place that our parents and grandparents built. It is where we belong."
Mr Biddle did not believe Koutu had a gang problem but thought the meeting was necessary to clear the air.
"We want to ensure that people feel safe in their own community and we want to make it a safe place for everyone who lives here."
The meeting is being held at Tumahaurangi Marae on Koutu Rd from 6pm on Thursday.
