Two new national businesses are setting themselves up in Rotorua which could create up to 30 new jobs in the city.
The two businesses, which are two national chains that are not currently in the city, are set to move into a building on Lake Rd near the Gull service station this year.
One of the businesses was only weeks away from opening while the second was due to open by the end of the year.
Project developer Don Atkins and Harcourts agent Paul Sanford have been working on the Lake Rd project together for close to two years in a bid to attract new business opportunities for the city.
Mr Sanford said they couldn't reveal which two businesses had been confirmed for the site or what kind of operations they would be but described them as "major national tenancies".
He said they were both new to Rotorua but had franchises in other parts of New Zealand and more details could be revealed in the next few weeks.
"Both of these national companies were attracted to Rotorua based on the fact that the site suited their particular planned operations," Mr Sanford said.
He said one had been confirmed for a 415sq m site in the building, which was being painted yellow, and was expecting an opening date of the middle of August.
The second tenancy confirmed for the Lake Rd site would be taking an 809sq m area of the building and would open around November.
Mr Sanford said the second business' site was being built especially for their needs.
Both franchises would create at least between 20 and 30 jobs in the city, Mr Sanford said.
About 70 carparks would also be available at the Lake Rd site.
Mr Sanford said he and Mr Atkinson were committed to trying to secure new jobs for the city and create growth in business and spending by attracting more business opportunities to Rotorua.
"Jobs is our key goal, it's to actually bring forward new tenancy and new business in Rotorua."
He said new businesses would encourage spending from not only locals but also tourists to the city.
Mr Sanford said Mr Atkinson started the Lake Rd development and had applied for resource consent last December.
Construction of the building started in March. Mr Atkinson, the project developer, was a local man who was responsible for the Tile Warehouse development about four years ago.
He also built a 400sq m space behind the Tile Warehouse which has been used for filming and studio work.
"The last time it was used was for a top Japanese [model]," he said.
He said that particular job brought about 30 people including crew and support people into the city for four days.
Meanwhile, Mr Sanford said more details would be revealed about the two new businesses for Rotorua closer to their opening dates.
