Members of the public worried Mt Ngongotaha was on fire on Monday night contacted emergency services.
The Rotorua Fire Service received several calls about 7pm but it was found the fire was controlled and those responsible had a permit, senior station officer Jim Prescott said.
It's understood the fire was one of several beacons lit by Scouts as part of Queen's Jubilee celebrations.
More than 4000 sites around the Commonwealth were expected to take part in the lighting.
