Rotorua will host the nation's first freefall championship, where competitors will try hard to spin, twist and outflip each other.
Event co-ordinator David Hockly says Saturday's event will the first of its kind held in the Southern Hemisphere. People will take turns to perform as many tricks as possible using a wind tunnel.
The machine produces a vertical stream of air strong enough to suspend a person in mid-air.
Freefalling is often used by skydivers for training. "There's eight people registered so far from all over the country including Rotorua and we're hoping to double that number as it gets closer to the time," Mr Hockly said.
Held at the Freefall Xtreme-Agroventures in Ngongotaha, the event will feature several categories for amateurs and professionals. These include the Air Jam, a minute of improvisation to impress the judges and Don't spill the V, where people try to spread the energy drink liquid from one side of the wind tunnel to the other.
"Spectators can watch free and on any given day the people watching have as much fun as those that are doing it," he said.
"Just seeing the freefallers' facial expressions and them falling out of the tunnel is pretty entertaining."
Music will be provided by an onsite DJ and V drink giveaways will be on offer.
The National Freeflight Championship will run from 11am-4pm, with an hour of practice time for competitors at 10am. Entry fee is $55 per contestant and spectators can watch for free.
