Tourists might have noticed a giant cricket ball at many of the city's popular attractions this week - but their eyes weren't fooling them.
The cricket ball was seen bouncing around popular holiday spots such as OGO and Te Puia this week for photo and video shoots in the lead-up to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Destination Rotorua Marketing general manager Oscar Nathan said the footage showcased to the international market that outside of the seven cities hosting games, there were key destinations such as Rotorua to plan for a visit with stunning landscapes and activities.
"We're really pleased to have featured in this publicity as Rotorua is in close driving distance to host cities Auckland and Hamilton and we will be encouraging people to plan a visit here during their trip."
It was 23 years since New Zealand last hosted the Cricket World Cup and the tournament had now become one of the biggest sporting events in the world. A million people are expected to attend matches and another billion to watch on television. New Zealand co-hosts the 2015 World Cup with Australia. The ICC Cricket World Cup's 49-match schedule is set to be played from February 14 to March 29, 2015, and New Zealand will play host to the 14 teams from every competing cricket nation.
Tourism New Zealand's chief executive Kevin Bowler said the event was about taking the attention New Zealand gained as host of the event and using it to tell the world that the country was a beautiful place to visit, with friendly people and unforgettable experiences.
"Our message to the millions of cricket fans is that the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup offers the unique chance to experience the buzz of a global sports event that allows ample time to explore a stunningly diverse and beautiful country in between matches."
