Welsh rugby club Newport revealed yesterday that it will block Joost van der Westhuizen from playing rugby anywhere after the Springbok star reneged on a contract to play at Newport's home ground, Rodney Parade.
Van der Westhuizen, the Springbok halfback, signed a one-year deal with Newport in May and was due to arrive in Wales this week.
However, he backed out yesterday to continue his Currie Cup career with the Blue Bulls and try to improve on his 75 caps for South Africa.
Newport will seek financial compensation and insist he cannot play anywhere until released from his contract with the club.
