Veteran National MP John Carter has announced he will not stand for re-election next year.
The Northland MP has been in parliament for eight terms for a total of 23 years.
Mr Carter says he's had an incredible journey over the years, but it's time to move on with his life.
He says the highlight has been Civil Defence Minister and being able to give the people of Canterbury some assurance in the early days after the September 4 earthquake.
