High pressure lies over the North Island while a slow moving front lies over the lower South Island. Another front moves onto the South Island today and then onto the North Island during Wednesday. The front becomes slow moving and weakens over the North Island while a ridge builds over the South Island on Thursday. A northerly flow develops over New Zealand on Friday ahead of another front approaching from the west.

Strong wind advisory. Tuesday: Northerly 20 knots, rising to 25 knots gusting 35 knots this morning, and to 30 knots gusting 40 knots this afternoon. Sea becoming rough in the morning. Mostly cloudy, fair visibility in a few showers.

Outlook until midnight Friday: Wednesday: Northerly rising to 35 knots in the morning, changing northwest 15 knots in the afternoon. Easing to variable 5 knots at night. A period of rain.
