The road around the scene where two people died in a two-car crash on SH 2 at Mangatawhiri reopened this evening after being closed for several hours
Police, fire and ambulance were called to the incident about 1.20pm today.
Occupants of the other vehicle were uninjured.
Diversions were in place for northbound traffic, and the SH1/SH2 northbound intersection, with police warning motorists heading to and from the Coromandel to expect lengthy delays.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident.
The crash site makes up part of the Waikato's blackest stretch of road, State Highway 2 from the end of Auckland's Southern Motorway through Maramarua to the Thames turnoff near Mangatarata, where there have been at least 30 fatal crashes since 2001.
At the end of last year, New Zealand Transport Agency reduced the speed limit the section on SH2 between Pokeno and the intersection with SH25, near Mangatarata from 100 km/h to 90 km/h.
