The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is concerned about the integrity of the floodwall at Thornton School near Whakatane.
While it is being reinforced with rock, they say there is a likelihood it may fail.

"As a precaution, residents living in that area will be evacuated," a spokesperson posted on the council's Facebook page.
"We'll keep the road open as long as possible, but it will be closed if the floodwall does fail."
Work across the district continues into the night to minimise damage and ensure public safety.
"Getting assistance to areas cut off by flooding is a top priority," the spokesperson said.
