A dying man wants to be New Zealand's northern-most mayor.
Des Mahoney, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2000, says he is standing for the Far North District Council mayoralty because he wants the council to treat people with dignity and respect.
Mr Mahoney has engaged in a series of high-profile battles with the council, starting in 2001 after he experienced drainage and sewerage problems on his property.
The incumbent mayor, Yvonne Sharp, has confirmed she will stand again.
