The Department of Conservation's controversial dolphin-tagging trial is underway.
Staff have successfully attached satellite transmitters to three Banks Peninsula Hector's dolphins.
The tagging is an attempt to learn more about the mammals to help the endangered species survive.
However, it is opposed by some environmental groups who say it does more harm than good.
DOC's research team leader, Dr Greg Stone, says the tagging was overseen by two specialist vets and the dolphins show little reaction, swimming off on their release to join the rest of their pod.
He says they have been tracking the first tagged dolphin for more than 24 hours now and she is displaying normal behaviour.
