Five of the six Taradale "broomstick boys" are likely to complete their jail sentences at home.
Five of the six attackers who are still in jail applied for home detention at a Parole Board hearing in Napier last week .
The youths were sentenced in the High Court at Napier on May 16, after a retrial in Wellington, for their roles in an assault with a broomstick on a 17-year-old classmate at a party in October 2001.
The father of the victim said today he was told Andrew Castles -- singled out as the ringleader behind the attack -- would start home detention next month.
He said four of the other boys were likely to start home detention within three months after August, and that their releases would be staggered.
A Parole Board spokesman today confirmed that a decision had been made, but to allow time for all parties to be notified, the decision would not be officially released until tomorrow.
Castles was the only one who pleaded guilty at the first broomstick trial. He has served 17 months of a 30-month sentence for sexual violation.
Kent Burns, Gabriel Williams and Daniel Cutbill received sentences of two years in jail for sexual violation, while Mark Hagen and Anthony Lloyd got two and a half years for sexual violation and 18 months for attempted sexual violation.
Rewi Gemmell was jailed for nine months for indecent assault, and has already served his time.
