Two people are dead after overnight road accidents.
A 20-year-old Wainuiomata man died when the silver Mitsubishi Evo 3 car police believe he was driving flipped off State Highway 2 and landed on a railway line north of Wellington.
The man's name has not yet been released. One other person in the car sustained moderate injures and a third had minor injuries.
Senior Sergeant Tony Smith of Wellington Police said the crash happened about 11.15pm on the Hutt Motorway at Horokiwi.
Mr Smith said police would like to hear from anyone who saw the Mitsubishi or a silver Subaru travelling south towards Wellington at the time.
The car flipped through a safety barrier and landed on its roof, Mr Smith said.
Both southbound lanes of SH2 heading into Wellington city and the railway line were closed for a time after the crash.
Meanwhile, a man was killed and two other people were seriously injured after a two-car head-on collision in Northland.
The crash happened at 11.30pm yesterday on State Highway 14 at Maungatapere, about 12km southwest of Whangarei.
Police said one car crossed the centreline, colliding with the other.
The sole occupant of one vehicle, a 35-year-old man, died immediately. His name has not yet been released.
Three of the five others involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.
Police said the incident happened in wet conditions in an area with a temporary 50kmh speed limit because of road works.
* Meanwhile, a 49-year-old Hamilton pedestrian who died at the scene after a car struck him near Mystery Creek about 5.50pm yesterday was today named as Paul Ivan Hogan.
The car's driver was not injured.
