A male teacher at a South Island high school has been suspended for allegedly having a sexual relationship with one of his students.
The teacher, aged in his early 20s, was stood down by the board of Timaru's Roncalli College about three weeks ago while it carried out an internal investigation.
It is understood the female student was 17 at the time and is now at university.
Board chairman Terry Byrne confirmed the teacher had been suspended on full pay.
He would not discuss the suspension and was not sure how long the investigation would take.
New Zealand School Trustees Association president Chris France said if a teacher was found guilty of misconduct the school board could dismiss the teacher.
The board was then obliged to report the case to the New Zealand Teachers' Council. The council would then hold a hearing to which the teacher was invited.
Mr France said it was up to the council to decide whether to deregister a teacher or not.
