Emergency services in the Auckland region had a hectic morning dealing with a series of incidents, including two fatal crashes.
One man was killed in a two-car smash on Tamaki Drive about 7am today.
The other vehicle failed to stop, but police say they found it later after it had crashed into a paddock in Karaka. Inspector Dave Montgomery of the northern police communications unit said the driver of the car that did not stop would be breath-tested for alcohol. The other occupants of the car would also be questioned by police.
The dead man's name has not yet been released.
At Ranui, northwest of Auckland, a pedestrian died after being struck by a train. Police were attending the incident and further details were not available.
Near Silverdale, north of Auckland, a crash involving a car and a truck left two people with serious injuries.
Part of the southern motorway was closed after a collision between a car and truck, which left at least one person injured and an oil spill across the road.
In New Windsor, five people were hurt, but none seriously, when a bus ploughed into a butcher's shop. One person was taken to Auckland Hospital, and an elderly woman outside the shop suffered cuts and grazes after being struck by the bus. Three other people had minor injuries and were left shaken by the crash.
And Avondale police were called to help capture six horses that escaped from Avondale race course, and startled motorists as they ran down nearby Ash Street. The horses' handlers recaptured the animals quickly.
