A man believed to be a South Auckland gang leader has been found hiding out at a remote Northland coastal settlement with a cache of stolen property protected by surveillance equipment, police said today.
Police Constable Gavin Benney said a house at Whananaki South, about 40km north-east of Whangarei, was searched yesterday and a 35-year-old man arrested.
Police found a surveillance camera attached to the house in a Whananaki South bay, and the man - alleged to be a Pukekohe gang leader - hiding in bushes.
A police scanner and a device for detecting electronic bugs were allegedly among the assortment of property found at the address.
The man was held in police custody overnight and was to appear in Whangarei District Court later today charged with two counts of receiving a camper van and a Land Cruiser.
