Two cows running loose on State Highway 10 caused havoc in traffic near Kerikeri in the Far North, putting a woman driver in hospital and wrecking at least one car.
One animal was killed when it charged head-on into a south-bound car near Kapiro Rd, about 2km north of Waipapa, on Thursday night.
The car's elderly driver was taken to Bay of Islands Hospital at Kawakawa with what is believed to be moderate injuries. Her car was wrecked.
"The cow just charged head-on into the car, like whammo," said Sergeant John Thorn.
A few minutes earlier, another cow had hit a second car near Waipapa township. No one was hurt in that collision, but the animal was put down.
