Police hunting the picnic-spot killer they suspect is mentally unstable are working through a list of nearly 1000 Holden cars.
The tall, overweight Maori was thought to be driving a VN model Holden Commodore when he fled from the Omana Regional Park in southeast Auckland on April 14 after stabbing Faletoi Kei, 41, in the stomach.
Mr Kei died minutes later in his wife's arms.
Detective Inspector John Manning said the Commodore was probably made in the late 1980s or early 1990s and was thought to be light blue.
It was last seen on the Whitford-Maraetai Rd soon after the killing.
All blue VN Holdens registered to Auckland owners would be tracked down, he said.
The killer had been in the park for at least two hours before the attack. Witnesses said he stared at parkgoers but said nothing.
Mr Kei, a devout Christian, had offered the man a meal with his family.
