The Australian Statistician has welcomed the appointment of one of his key staff to head Statistics New Zealand.
Brian Pink, the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) statistical support group manager, takes up his new job in Wellington on October 16.
He takes over from Len Cook, named National Statistician in Britain this year, and becomes the first non-New Zealander in the postwar era to get the job.
Mr Pink's appointment was one of two major public service posts announced yesterday by State Services Commissioner Michael Wintringham.
Peter Hughes, now interim chief executive of the Health Funding Authority, was named Secretary for Internal Affairs and chief executive of the Department of Internal Affairs.
Australian Statistician Dennis Trewin said that, as well as recognising his unique abilities, Mr Pink's selection for the Wellington position "strengthens the already very strong and productive relationship" between the ABS and Statistics New Zealand.
Mr Pink at present runs a large part of operations at the ABS, with responsibility for 900 permanent staff and 650 part-time field staff, and an annual budget of $A100 million ($135.5 million).
