Police say "specialist staff" have been called in to help identify two people who died in a fiery car crash in Dunedin early Saturday morning.
The duo died and one person was seriously injured after a car and a truck collided, before the car caught fire.
The crash and subsequent fire occurred about 3.30am on King Edward St, in the Dunedin suburb of Kensington.
"Due to the condition of the victim's bodies, specialist staff are helping to identify them," police said in a statement.
"As such formal identification of the victims may take some time."
Two occupants of the car died at the scene - the driver of the car and a passenger. Another passenger in the car suffered serious injuries, while the driver of the truck suffered moderate injuries.
Both are in Dunedin Hospital.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
