The man accused of murdering promising rugby star and community volunteer Rima Sikei in a Mount Roskill street before Christmas has appeared in court but still cannot be named.
Sikei, 21, died on December 7 soon after he was stabbed on William Blofield Ave - just 500m from his family home.
Police were called to an altercation in the street and when they arrived, officers found Sikei dead.
Along with the murder charge, the 32-year-old is also facing two charges of attempted murder.
He appeared in the High Court at Auckland today before Justice Simon Moore.
Name suppression had been granted at his first appearance in the Auckland District Court last month.
It was continued today on the basis of the accused's mental health.
Member's of Sikei's family were in court to face the accused.
They wore T-shirts adorned with Sikei's face and the words "fly high".
Last month Sikei's brother Semisi spoke about the family's loss.
"The story we have been told is that Rima was in the car with his friends and another car came up," Semisi Sikei said.
"The others got out of the car and started smashing up the car Rima was in.
"My brother and his friends jumped out and started to fight them off - but the other car had weapons.
"My brother tried to tell them to drop the weapons …
"Rima was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Sikei was a promising rugby player who worked as a landscaper and volunteered in the community for various groups.
He mentored young people and hoped to join the police.
"He was just a really lovely guy, everyone got along with him," said Semisi Sikei.
"He was a really nice person … he was really lovable, he always had a smile on his face."
