A motorcyclist is recovering in hospital after initially being thought to have suffered critical injuries in a crash at Ruapuna Raceway near Christchurch this afternoon.
The rider's condition following the 3.30pm crash was thought to be critical and St John Ambulance were called.
But a post on the New Zealand Superbike Championship Facebook page about 7pm stated the injured person's scans at Christchurch Hospital "appear clear".
"[The] rider will remain in hospital under observation overnight."
The NZ Superbike Championship was taking place at the raceway today.
A fellow contestant posted on a Facebook page about the incident.
"Unfortunately our first race was red flagged and canceled after a serious crash. Thoughts are with all riders and familys involved and hope for a speedy recovery."
A police spokeswoman confirmed they were notified of the incident shortly after 4pm.
Police were making inquiries, she said.
