A gas leak from an LPG storage tank at Picton's rail yard disrupted Cook Strait ferries and trains earlier today.
Fire crews from Picton and Nelson isolated the leak in a 24,000 litre tank and a 200 metre cordon was been established.
The issue had now been fixed, cordons had been removed and shipping was back to normal.
Fire and Emergency's Ian Littlejohn said port operations were suspended and ferries were asked not to dock at the wharf.
He said crews had worked to isolate the leak and had stopped it.
Littlejohn said they then vented and cleared the area.
Picton's Ferry Terminal was evacuated, as well as some surrounding areas.
People in vehicles were stuck on an Interislander ferry off Picton for a couple of hours.
At 10.15 this morning, KiwiRail staff found a parked wagon carrying LPG was leaking at the Picton yard.
As a safety precaution, passengers travelling from Wellington to Picton with vehicles were instructed to remain on board the Aratere.
Passengers on foot who were going to Wellington were let on to the ship.
People in vehicles waiting to go to the capital were transferred to the ferry terminal.
Interislander general manager Mark Thompson said firefighters carried out inspections and until this work was concluded, there was no movement on or off the ship.
